DOES THIS DRIVER LOOK LIKE HE IS GETTING MUCH REST?

100_0998

Location: Coachella, CA - Outside Air Tempurature 101F - Tempurature inside the Sleeper? UNBEARABLE!

Do you have a car? I know ridiculous question right, of course you do! Now think about the last time you parked your car in the sun while you went shopping or were at work. How hot was the interior of your car when you got inside? 120 degrees, 130? Higher? Was your steering wheel so hot you had to use your fingertips to steer? With the current Diesel Anti-Idling laws being passed nationwide, we expect our Truck Drivers to try to sleep in their sleepers in those very same conditions! No A/C, No Heat! See the

heat study from the Journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society.

Laws vary from state to state, some do allow idling in extreme hot/cold, and others will only allow idling for 5 or 10 minutes per hour in extreme conditions. Fines are extreme also in some places going upwards of $25,000.

There are alternatives to idling a trucks engine.

  • APU’s (Auxiliary Power Units) similar to those used on airliners to maintain climate control and electricity when parked. These units are started when the main diesel engine is shut down and use a very minimal amount of fuel to operate. The cost of an APU installed start at about $8,000 per truck, and in fuel savings over idling the main engine, pay for themselves fully in less than 1 year.
  • IDLEAIRE, which when hooked to a truck provides climate control, electricity, cable TV and internet. This service is not cheap at $2.89 per hour plus tax. This comes to 28.90 per 10-hour rest stop. This may not seem like much but in a month it adds up to almost $900 not including tax. IdleAire is also very limited in its locations.
  • Motel Rooms. At $50 per night or higher this is not a feasible alternative, not to mention where do you park the truck in a secure location!
  • Battery powered APU’s are being developed by truck manufacturers but this technology is still in its infancy and not a real alternative yet.

As you can see diesel APU’s which are attached to the truck is the best idle reduction technology we have today. Currently all states allow the use of diesel APU’s.

Company employed drivers are especially affected by these laws. Many companies refuse to install APU’s or pay for IdleAire or Motels for their drivers. They see Anti-Idling laws as a means to save money. Meanwhile their drivers suffer. With all the current emphasis on Driver Fatigue, this is a definite cause for fatigue. One other point, truckers change climates on a daily basis as they travel around the country.

The United States government does offer tax incentives to companies who install APU’s on their equipment and many states allow an extra 400 lbs over the gross vehicle weight for those same trucks. Between the fuel savings and tax incentives there is no reason for fleet owners not to install APU’s on their trucks. OSHA has standards on just about all industries for the safety and health of employees including working in hot environments. However OSHA has for the most part ignored the needs of truck drivers. Some of the hazards of sleeping in a hot truck ranges from heat stroke to death. On the other scale, in cold weather drivers suffer from frostbite or more seriously freezing to death. I am sure the cases of death are very rare, it does happen. I personally have been hospitalized once for heat stroke in Las Vegas while trying to walk inside the truckstop from my hot truck to get water when I passed out on the hot pavement and also suffered 2nd degree burns from the pavement. I have also suffered from frostbite on my legs and feet while sleeping in New York.

The Anti-Idling laws are here to stay, and I do not have a problem with them in concept. But we as a nation need to put the cart back behind the horse and find a solution for the company employed truck drivers so they can get the proper rest they need to drive a 40-ton truck down our highways.

I propose that as Americans we contact our representatives with the following:

  • Mandate through legislation that the fleet owners must provide some form of APU on their equipment and protect their employees from the environment.
  • Temporarily modify the currently anti-idling laws until the former is implemented.

Good Luck on the campaign. What your doing is great. I have a APU and love it. Being an O/O I save alot of fuel, I think its legal in CA now also. Great job here, fight the good fight

I am not a trucker but if I was I would wonder just what the lawmakers want you to do. a man/woman needs rest. i would reather this issue be about fuel savings instaed of phony global warming knee jerk reactions. If the govt. wants this then alternative ways of heating and cooling trucks need to be met before these laws are enforced. IF the govt gets less pollution and the trucking companies get the fuel savings let them pay for the truckstop hookups the men and women who drive would use (they dont pay now do they?). Why should they have to pay to make a few happy.

Today while listening to Land Line Now (radio show by OOIDA) they had a caller talk about how someone came into his truck while he was sleeping. The engine was off, windows had special screens to keep bugs out and allow the windows to be part way down for ventilation. That is where the problem was, the person who entered this drivers truck did so just by breaking through the screen and opening the door. With the recent shooting death of 35-year-old truck driver Jason Rivenburg and other crimes against truck drivers parked in and out of truckstops should be reason enough for companies to protect their drivers and install proper equipment so drivers do not have to sleep with open windows. Security should be reason enough for companies to install APU’s.
Some food for thought – Where do you normally find TruckStops? Are they in high rent neighborhoods? If you are not a trucker, take a cruise through a local truckstop and notice what part of town it is in. Would you sleep in your home with all the windows open?

Being an independent Trucker, being able to even FIND a place to park let alone an idle-aire has been next to impossible! Now that our economy has taken the dump it has, parking is not a problem. Staying Cool/Warm is. I do not have an APU nor the resources to acquire one! I would gladly install one should there be a low down payment available but to have 5-8k on hand, for justification of a greenhouse law? Don’t think so, more important I have that reserve funding available for a blown tire or bent rim whilst driving down our well maintained highways and secondary roads.

What happened to the ARC loan I heard about a few months ago? I read somewhere that the money is not being given out like it should of been. Also there have been alot apply so that they could buy much needed equipment for their trucks. Just another Public Relations Fiasco. I only think it would be the humane thing for the Goverment to do. No, Instead they lead the truckers on acting as though they care when they don’t. Lots applied and spent lots of time filling out paper work for a program that doesnt have any money. Simple fact is the American People do not care about us as a industry. When you have all kind of advertising from lawyers etc. saying stuff like have you been injured by a trucker call us we’ll get you millions etc., When studies show its not the truckers fault in most accidents. Just out and out lies they tell about us. You never hear about the truckers that risk their lives helping people from accidents etc. I only hear the bad about us. I’ve only been in the business myself for four years but if I had known how drivers are treated like second rate citizens I would of never got my CDL. Now when some famous person or some rich politians family dies from a driver being fatiged from having to get up every hour to start the engine to run for 5 to 10 min (When ALLowed) to be able to breathe maybe someone will be a little more understanding of our bad treatment by our companies and our goverment. Its pitiful!

first off beware of 1 Co out there selling APU’S stay as far away as you can from the pony-pac brand guy’s now, dont get me wrong its a great unit when it is working right. a little louder than the others out there. but it cools great! big condenser makes it cool better. now here’s the rub. if you need service there is no one to do it. no service centers, no help from the manufacture in solving problems either. Rex( the inventer) is only interested in selling them and then he forgets them. I’ll keep mine on the truck till things get better then it’s comming off and I’ll get a tri-pac.

Now Texas has joined in. I have heard some drivers talking about Texas doing sweeps of the truckstops in much the same manner that Calif has been doing it. I personally haven’t seen it happen, sure wish I could get some video of it to post here.
